Street Fighter X Tekken

Street Fighter X Tekken (pronounced Street Fighter Cross Tekken) is an upcoming crossover fighting game being developed by Capcom. The game was announced at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con International by Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono. The game is set to release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows and PlayStation Vita sometime in March 2012. The game will feature characters from both the Street Fighter franchise and Namco's Tekken series. As the game is being made by Capcom, with Namco being involved more in the licensing of the Tekken cast, the gameplay will be based on the 2D gameplay of Street Fighter as opposed to the Tekken series, and will feature projectile moves such as the Hadouken. Namco is currently producing their own take on the crossover, Tekken X Street Fighter, which will follow their own style of gameplay.
The game will be out on March 6, 2012 (expected date)

Android App Revenue Only 7% of iOS Revenue? Not So Fast

Up until last year Android revenue for app developers used to be pretty abysmal, and in some cases it was even 50 times smaller than iOS revenue. This was in part because of Apple’s huge lead with the iPhone in user base, when Android was still just in the growing period.

So I saw a report yesterday saying that Android apps get only 7% of the revenue of iOS, I immediately thought that’s an improvement, considering it’s just 15x smaller. However, I also thought it sounds a little too small considering how far Android has gotten, with 200 million devices versus Apple’s 250 million. Plus, I had a feeling he would compare the revenues the wrong way.

And it seems I was right. He only compared the “paid apps” revenues. I think everyone knows by now that most apps on Android are free and ad-based, not paid apps. So by default this was a flawed comparison. Some developers even make more money on Android by using ads and offering their apps for free, than they make on iOS by offering paid apps. And that is completely relevant to a new developer, but this chart would mislead him into thinking there’s no way of making as much money as on iOS. That is just wrong.

But it doesn’t stop here. Another way he’s doing it wrong is by comparing the total revenue Apple has paid to developers since 2007 to the total revenue Android has paid to developers since its inception.

Why would he even do that? What’s the point of that, other than to show Apple is somehow ahead? That stat is meaningless for developers deciding on which platform to build their app now. If Android would’ve been stagnant since 2008, and the ratio between Apple’s market share and Android’s market share would’ve been kept the same, then it would’ve made sense. But it’s far from that.

Last year Android went from 4% market share to 30%, and this year it has gone from 30% to around 55%. That’s about 2:1 ratio compared to Apple for new users, and almost 1:1 ratio for total user base, and because of the fast growth it’s going to surpass Apple in user base very soon, too.

So it really doesn’t make sense to compare the revenues both platforms got 2 years ago. What developers would want to know is how much money they could make right now on each, and how easy it would be to become popular on each of them. So a stat for say the last 3 months, would be a whole lot more relevant to them than a stat that shows how much money Android made when it barely even existed.

I know some people like to say that Android users only like free stuff, which could be true for some of the more tech oriented ones, but let’s not forget that the techies are quickly becoming a small percentage of all the people buying Android phones. Android phones are everywhere and almost at any price point. It’s bound to become used by just about anyone, including regular people who, just like a lot of iPhone users, would prefer the convenience of buying an app rather than trying to get it for free through other means.

The paid apps are more popular on iOS because Apple had their credit cards from day one, and it’s much easier to buy an app when your credit card is already stored in the account, rather than trying to buy an application, and getting prompted for your credit card information. Fortunately, I hear that Android 4.0 will ask you for your credit card information from day one (if you’re willing to give it of course) so that should make it a lot more easier for normal people to buy apps in the future.

At the rate Android is growing, there’s no doubt in my mind that it will become the most popular mobile platform in a couple of years, and that includes giving the most revenue to developers, too.

Facebook testing Credits outside of Facebook

In the test, users of those games will have only one choice of payment option, Facebook Credits, instead of the usual GameHouse options of paying by credit card or PayPal. Players will be able to integrate their game experience of these games on both GameHouse and Facebook and pay for goods from one funding source. Facebook and GameHouse, a unit of RealNetworks, are looking to see how players react to the option, which will determine how each proceeds with Facebook Credits.

This could be a big springboard for Facebook to become a major payments player if it aggressively takes its Facebook Credits to other properties on the web. It’s already made Facebook Credits mandatory for gaming apps on Facebook as of July 1 and an option for other Facebook apps. It recently extended credits to mobile app developers who want to build HTML5 apps on its mobile platform. It was also allowing people to pay using Facebook Credits for things like Facebook Deals. If it can leverage its relationships with Facebook Connect publishers, it can offer a fast and easy payment alternative to credit cards, PayPal or other phone billing options.

Facebook would likely have to lower its cut of transactions, which is currently 30 percent for Facebook developers, if it wants to move beyond virtual goods. But if it got it down to a percentage that was competitive, say around 5 percent or so, it could build off the many Facebook users that already have Facebook Credits. Websites like GameHouse, as well as independent game developers, may stand to benefit if they can drive more transactions with the help of Facebook Credits.

FACEBOOK is making a Cell Phone

The rumor of a Facebook phone, or a smartphone with deeply integrated Facebook social-networking tools in it, first emerged a little more than a year ago. Back then, CNET had confirmed the social network had reached out to hardware manufacturers and carriers seeking input on a Facebook-branded phone. But rumors faded as devices with Facebook buttons were announced this year. Now it looks like Facebook may have revised its plans to build its own phone.
On Monday, the All ThingsD Web site reported that Facebook is working with cell phone maker HTC to build a smartphone with the Facebook social-networking technology built into the core of the device. The new phone is code-named "Buffy" after the television show about a vampire slayer. The phone will be based on a modified version of Android, which has been tweaked by Facebook so that its services are deeply integrated, All ThingsD reported, citing unnamed sources.

All ThingsD said that Facebook had also considered Samsung to make the device, but went with HTC instead. HTC has made at least two phones already with dedicated Facebook buttons. The Salsa and ChaCha, which have Facebook buttons, were introduced earlier this year. There are other phone manufacturers that have put Facebook buttons on their phones, including INQ Mobile and Motorola.
But according to All ThingsD, the "Buffy" Facebook phone will be different from these other others devices, because it won't just provide access to Facebook. Instead, it will have the social networking technology developed by the company integrated into the device. Other platforms have done a bit of this already. For example, Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system has Facebook and Twitter integrated into the OS so that contacts are shared across multiple applications on the phone. And previously, Facebook has worked with Research in Motion to integrate Facebook into its BlackBerry devices. It also worked closely with Palm.
There's no question that mobile is an important element of Facebook's strategy for the future. But what the company plans to achieve by building its own devices is not yet known. If it chooses to build its own "Facebook phone," the company faces stiff competition in the smartphone market from players such as Apple's iPhone and Google's Android platform. Each of these platforms also support Facebook apps, so again its unclear what Facebook will do with the integration of its technology into a phone to make it a truly different experience.
Facebook declined to comment for the All ThingsD story and offered the publication this statement:
"Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."
HTC also declined to comment on the story.
